Not that we condone drinking and driving at any time of the year, but between now and the New Year is an especially bad time to try getting away with it.

During the Christmas and New Year holiday periods, statistics show a rise in drunk-driving deaths. In fact, the latest NHTSA data shows that last December's drunk driving deaths were one of the highest in 15 years.

As a result, New Jersey is again participating in the NHTSA's Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

The campaign, which runs from December 5- January 1, aims to educate people about the dangers and consequences of driving drunk.

New Jersey Police Are Looking For Drunk Drivers

New Jersey's Division of Highway Traffic Safety‘s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” kicked off Friday and runs until Jan. 1, officials said.

The state has handed out over $700K to 125 NJ towns for increased patrols and DUI checkpoints.

During this period in 2024, police in NJ made 590 arrests for impaired driving and wrote almost 3000 speeding tickets.

Nearly a third of the 647 fatal crashes in New Jersey in 2024 involved a driver who had been drinking. The crashes resulted in 684 deaths.

So far in 2025, we are faring somewhat better. There have been 502 fatal crashes in New Jersey resulting in 535 deaths.

“No one wants an empty seat at the holiday table,” Attorney General Matt Platkin said in a statement.

“Impaired driving is completely unacceptable and can have devastating consequences. Police across the state will be out removing impaired drivers from the road to protect New Jersey families during the holiday season.”
