It would be great if we found a way that would guarantee us winning a Mega Millions Jackpot.  Perhaps, you've come to realize that the jackpot has reached a level, where you may well be able to purchase every possible combination of numbers and still walk away with a profit.

Not so fast.  Business Insider broke down the numbers.

First, let's look at the game itself.  To win the Jackpot, you need to match 5 numbers from 70 balls.  That means there are 12,103,014 combinations.  Then, you need to pick the bonus ball, out of 25 possible numbers.  If you multiply the twenty possible combinations, that brings the number of combinations to 302,575,350.  Each of these tickets will cost two bucks, bringing your investment to $605,150,700.

Technically, the jackpot can now be bought.

By now, you might be trying to figure out how many wealthy relatives, friends, and acquaintances you have, that might be able to toss a few million into your plan.

Even if you could piece together the $605,105,700 it would take to buy all the tickets necessary, you may find that finding the investors is the easy part.

The logistics of pulling this off would make this plan nearly impossible.

Keep in mind that since we need specific number combinations, this plan requires that each ticket be filled out individually.  No Quick Pick here.  Doing it this way would require a list of the combinations we would use.  This shouldn't be a problem.  I'm sure there's a computer program that can produce that.

But how to fill out all those entries?  Going back to the Business Insider story, they estimate if you hired 232,321 people, and had each fill out 1302 Mega Millions entries, it would take each person 10 hours a day for 3 days to fill out all those entries if they did 43 tickets an hour.  If you paid each person $15/hr, that adds another $3,484,815 to your cost for a total of roughly $608,590,515.

Then there's the challenge of entering all these tickets.  Can you imagine bringing all these tickets to Shop-Rite?  And how would you like to be the person BEHIND the person who wants to bring all these tickets in?  I've seen arguments on that line for much less.

Finally, even if you got this far in the process, there's one big possibility that would sink your whole effort.  This possibility is something you have no control over.

Mega Millions is a game of chance.  There is always the distinct possibility that other people may also pick the winning combination.  If one other person were to win, it would be game over.
