Joseph Mazzeo of Linwood, a lifetime owner of South Jersey food markets, died on Tuesday.

The former owner of Joe's Seaside Super Market in Brigantine and co-owner of Tilton Market in Northfield was 94.

According to his obituary, Mazzeo grew up in Egg Harbor City and was in a US Navy veteran before starting his grocery career.

Mazzeo Owned Brigantine's Joe's Seaside Market

Joseph Mazzeo owned and operated Joe's Seaside Super Market at 1200 W Brigantine Avenue for 26 years, a popular spot for fresh meats and seafood, prepared foods, sandwiches, produce, and water ice.

The Original Co-Owner of Tilton Market

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Tilton Market shared the news that Joseph Mazzeo had died.

Mazzeo and Rich Senese bought Joe's Market on Tilton Road in Northfield in 1970 and worked together to establish the business as a local source of fresh meats and deli items.

Joe Mazzeo sold his share to Rich Senese in 1983 and Tilton Market has been owned by the Senese family ever since.

In Thursday's Facebook post, Tilton Market fondly recalled Joe Mazzeo's importance to the business.

It is a sad day. We found out some news. Co founder of Tilton Market, Joseph Mazzeo has passed. We are so thankful for his early years in developing the high standards, to which we try to uphold . Sometimes ole school values are dismissed. Joe taught us the importance of a quality product.

Joe's Market Became Tilton Market

Joe and Gertrude Guerrier opened Joe's Market on Philadelphia Avenue in Egg Harbor City before relocating to the site of Tilton Market on Tilton and Zion Road in Northfield in 1956.

In 1970, the couple sold the business to their friend Joseph Mazzeo and Rich Senese who incorporated Tilton Market on Aug 31, 1970, according to the Market's employee handbook.

In her obituary in 2020, Gertrude Guerrier's family gives a "special thank-you to her lifelong friend, Joseph Mazzeo".
