Favorites: New Jersey’s 10 Most Popular Dog Breeds
New Jersey was recently named the eighth most dog-friendly state in 2024 by ShowSight Magazine.
The magazine says that the Garden State has more than 2,000 dog-friendly facilities, over 1,700 dog-friendly restaurants, and nearly 400 dog-friendly hotels.
But what are New Jersey's favorite dog breeds? We turned to dogster.com to find out. Their newly updated list of NJ's top dogs has just come out.
Here's a look at New Jersey's most popular dog breeds.
#10: Yorkshire Terrier
Yorkies can be excellent house or apartment dogs, especially for those living with limited space, and they are known for being friendly and fun-loving.
Yorkshire terriers are hypoallergenic and weigh no more than about 7 pounds.
9- German Shorthaired Pointer
German Shorthaired Pointers are social and playful dogs.
GSPs are a loyal and loving breed in the class of dogs known as the sporting group. They make a great addition to any family, even if you have kids and other pets.
They can be high energy and need a good bit of exercise.
8- Doberman Pinscher
Dobermans are known for their strong bonds with their families and are often described as "velcro dogs" due to their desire for constant companionship.
They are naturally protective of their families and can be excellent watchdogs. Their high energy levels make them best suited for active families.
7- Bulldog
Bulldogs are considered good family dogs due to their gentle, patient, and affectionate nature, making them excellent companions for children and other pets.
Bulldogs can be prone to breathing difficulties and easily overheat.
6 - Rottweiler
Rottweilers tend to be very loyal to family, so they're always rated as one of the top dogs to have with a family. They're great with kids, especially their own family.
Rotties can be stubborn and need good training as pups.
5 - Poodle
Poodles are one of the smartest dog breeds, which makes them very adaptable and easy to train.
Poodles require regular grooming, exercise, and mental stimulation.
4 - German Shepherd
German Shepherds are highly intelligent and eager to please, making them relatively easy to train.
German Shepherds are prone to certain health issues, such as hip and elbow dysplasia.
3 - Golden Retriever
Golden Retrievers are known for their friendly and gentle nature, making them great companions for families, especially children.
Goldens are known for their strong desire to be near their owners and crave attention.
2 - Labrador Retriever
Labs are energetic and love to play, making them great for active individuals who enjoy outdoor activities like running, hiking, or swimming.
Labs require a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation daily, which can be challenging if you have a busy lifestyle.
1- French Bulldogs
Frenchies are a gentle breed. They're usually calm and suited to a range of households. For example, they can be the perfect pet for families, singles, couples, or seniors.
French bulldogs are expensive -- running between $1,500 and $8000 -- because of their popularity, breeding challenges, and health concerns.
One final note after looking at NJ's most popular purebred dogs.
My personal favorite dog breed has always been a mixed breed. Please consider a good, mixed-breed dog the next time you are looking for a new family member.
