Ex-Somers Pt, Sea Isle Postal Supervisor Admits to Stealing $54K

A former post office supervisor in Somers Point and Sea Isle City admitted to charges that he misappropriated over $54,000 in U.S. Postal Service money in 2022 and 2023.

Former Postal Supervisor Stole Thousands From Post Office

Austin T. Mahan, 44, of Cape May Court House, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Christine P. O’Hearn in Camden on Monday to misappropriating $54,356 in money belonging to the United States Postal Service, according to a release from U.S. Attorney's Office, District of New Jersey.

Authorities say Mahan misappropriated postal funds for about six months in 2022 and 2023 while working as a customer service supervisor at the Sea Isle and Somers Point post offices, using U.S. Postal Service credit cards to make personal purchases at retail stores around South Jersey.

Complaint Listed Mahan's Unauthorized Purchases

The purchases included tens of thousands of dollars worth of gift cards, home decor items, home renovation materials, power and handheld tools, and tool storage equipment.

The complaint against him said he also bought personal items such as a Dyson cordless vacuum, LED fog light bulbs for his vehicle, batteries, shampoo, shaving cream, and food.

In two days in January 2023, Mahan spent $11,161.98 in two home-improvement stores and an office supply.

The money was spent on over 44 transactions made both in-person and online.

Investigators reviewed surveillance video showing Mahan buying personal items at retail stores using the Postal Service credit cards.

Sentencing Date Set

The charge to which Mahan pleaded guilty is punishable by a maximum of 10 years in prison and a maximum potential fine of $250,000, or a sum equal to the amount of value of the money or property misappropriated from the offense.

His sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 25th.
