A U.S. Coast Guardsman stationed at the Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May has been named Service Member of the Year for his off-duty actions helping to save the life of a motorcyclist involved in a serious accident.

U.S. Coast Guard Yeoman Second Class Cody Dmochowski is being recognized for helping to save the life of a motorcycle accident victim who had been thrown from his motorcycle into a heavily wooded area.

Coast Guardsman from Ocean County Helped Save a Life

Last summer, Cody Dmochowski, 25, who grew up in Brick Township, Ocean County, was driving in a wooded area of Jackson Township, NJ, with his girlfriend when they witnessed a motorcycle accident in which the rider was thrown from the cycle into the woods.

Dmochowski rushed to help the victim, who had suffered severe injuries, including a compound fracture with significant blood loss.

Dmochowski and girlfriend Adrianna Bollaro quickly got to work helping the injured biker and determining what injuries he had and relaying that information to the emergency dispatch, he told NJ.com.

Aware of the high risk of spinal injury, Dmochowski instructed the man to remain still, preventing further injury while dealing with the heavily wooded conditions to provide comfort and reassurance.

The two stayed on the scene for over an hour to assist with the investigation and later traveled to the hospital to check on the victim’s condition.

Dmochowski's commitment did not end there; he continued to provide support to the victim and the victim’s family. Without Dmochowski’s immediate, decisive, and heroic intervention, it is unlikely the rider would have survived.

Amazingly, the injured rider has recovered from his injuries even after being thrown from a cycle traveling 45 miles an hour.

Coast Guard Honors Ocean Co. Man Stationed in Cape May

In addition to his heroic actions on the day of the motorcycle crash, Cody Dmochowski is a Company Commander at Training Center Cape May, where he is one of only 56 specialists in the Coast Guard given the responsibility of transforming civilians into military members.

In the words of the Coast Guard, he is doing good work that hasn't gone unnoticed.

He expertly develops raw recruits, fostering trust while holding them to the highest standards of personal conduct, morality, and professional skill. Through his courage, dedication, and exceptional leadership, Dmochowski embodies the highest traditions of the U.S. Coast Guard.
