There's a new restaurant set to enter the chicken sandwich war in South Jersey. It's called Freebyrd Chicken.

Fast foodies who used to hit up the Checkers on the corner of White Horse Pike and Laurel Road in Stratford, Camden County for burgers and fries will soon find a chicken restaurant in its place, 42freeway.com reports.

Freebyrd Chicken is ready to take over the former Checkers, next to Echelon Ford.

There's no word on whether Freebyrd will hang onto the old Checkers double drive-thru lanes, or how much of a renovation there will be on the existing restaurant space, but if Freebyrd is any good it will get a lot of food traffic with the dealership right there and Stratford Police Dept. and Jefferson Hospital right up the road. Plus, Lindenwold PATCO train station is right across the street.

When I worked at Echelon Ford (ages ago) I ate from Checkers, like, 3 times a week. And, according to 42freeway's official Facebook page, the Freebyrd chicken sandwich sounds mouthwatering, with its buttermilk brined fried chicken, Alabama white BBQ sauce, and homemade pickles.

Another Freebyrd Chicken opened not long ago inside The Bourse Philadelphia and you can order alcohol there, but that won't be an option in Stratford since that Checkers had no liquor license.

There's no opening date yet for the Freebyrd in Stratford, but we'll keep you posted!
