Survey Findings: South Jersey’s Lowest Grocery Prices Revealed

At a time when you are watching every penny going on the grocery bill, a new survey from Consumer Reports has some very interesting findings about affordability.

According to the survey, four national grocery chains with stores in South Jersey sold them at lower prices than Walmart.

Walmart was used as the price baseline in this survey. A market price baseline is a good starting point in surveys where price comparisons are easy to make and commonly performed.

Walmart was the benchmark against which the other stores were judged.

Several local grocery stores also came out as being more expensive than Walmart in this survey, but we are going to look at the four that beat Walmart's prices in late summer 2025, when this national survey was completed.

Four South Jersey Grocery Stores That Beat Walmart Prices

Fourth Place: Aldi, the discount supermarket chain known for its low prices, streamlined stores, and focus on private-label groceries, which has local stores in Absecon, Egg Harbor Township, and Vineland, was 8.3% less expensive than Walmart.

Third Place: Lidl, the discount supermarket chain offering low prices on groceries, fresh bakery items, and a wide selection of private-label products, with South Jersey stores in Egg Harbor Township and Glassboro, was 8.5% less than Walmart.

Second Place: BJ's Wholesale Club, the members-only warehouse where you can stock up on everything from giant packs of paper towels to fresh groceries and surprisingly good deli finds, with local stores in Mays Landing and Vineland, came in  21% less expensive than Walmart.

First Place: Costco, the members-only warehouse where you go in for toilet paper and somehow leave with a 10-pound bag of snacks and a flat-screen TV, has a local store in Stafford Township, and was the least expensive, beating Walmart's price by 21.4%, according to Consumer Reports.
