A South Jersey school district is making big changes next school year by pushing their start times later. Will other New Jersey school districts follow suit?

Last month, City of Burlington Public Schools sent out a memo to all students' parents alerting them within the 2018-2019 school year, school will be starting later.

Starting school later has been a big topic in New Jersey for some time now. Last year alone, New Jersey Department of Education were holding public meetings for the possibility but as far as I know, nothing came of it.

Now, City of Burlington Public Schools are making the decision for themselves after years of research showing the benefits of later school times. These benefits include reducing car accidents, childhood obesity, poor performance in schools and lack of sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, teens on average get less than seven hours of sleep (mind you the recommended amount is 8 hours).

You can read the full memo sent to parents below:

The new school times for this school district go as follows:

  • Burlington City High School - 8:00 a.m. to 2:28 p.m.
  • Wilbur Watts Intermediate School - 8:05 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.
  • Edgewater Park School - 8:00 a.m. - 2:40 p.m.

Due to the later start times, NJ.com says class period are slightly shorter to account for the decrease.

Knowing how later school start times will benefit students, are you for or against other New Jersey schools starting later?
