Brigantine police say a motorcyclist was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash on Tuesday.

When police investigated, they found that the man riding the bike had been attempting to perform a wheelie when he lost control and was ejected from the motorcycle.

Motorcyclist Performing Wheelie Crashes Bike

Police were called to 5th Street South and W. Brigantine Avenue to help with a single-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle on Tuesday, July 22, a little before 5 pm.

When Brigantine Police arrived, they found Benjamin Campbell, 19, from Chesterfield, NJ, and another motorcyclist.

In a Facebook post, police say they were told that Campbell had fallen off his bike and injured himself.

While speaking with officers and EMTs, Campbell began having a serious medical emergency and was taken to the hospital by the Brigantine Fire and EMS Department.

Police Investigation Finds Reason for Crash

Further investigation showed that there was more to the story of the crash.

Officers found that Campbell was riding recklessly, performing a wheelie while riding south on W. Brigantine Avenue. He lost control of the motorcycle and was ejected from the seat and landed on the road.

The Facebook post updates that Campbell's condition in the hospital has stabilized.

Police plan to charge him with reckless driving and other charges.

This crash happened the same week that Brigantine Police were warning anyone who rides bikes or e-bikes that they will be enforcing New Jersey law to ensure safer riding, after a teen died last week in an accident with a car while riding an e-bike on the Somers Point bike path.
