The Atlantic County Sheriff's Office is mourning the death of retired K-9 officer Max.

In a Facebook post this week, the Atlantic County Sheriff's Office announced that Max had passed away.

Atlantic County Sheriff's K-9 Max Dies

In a short two-year stint with the Sheriff's Office, Max made a real impact.

K-9 Max, a black Labrador trained in Explosives Scent Detection, was partnered with his handler, Joseph Kleinow, from August 2016 to June 2018, according to the Facebook post.

During that period, K-9 Max was deployed on more than 20 calls for service, including explosives scent detection at public gatherings, K-9 demonstrations, and police investigations.

Max is Remembered for Finding Important Evidence

One case still stands out in K-9 Max's career as a sheriff. It was referenced in the Facebook post about Max

Officer Kleinow and K-9 Max assisted with the recovery of evidence from a shooting. Had it not been for K-9 Max at that time, the evidence from that crime may never have been recovered.

Max Was a Good Boy

As is the case when any special dog in your life passes away, you remember how much happiness the dog brought into your life.

The sheriff's Office reminisced about Max in this week's Facebook post.

Although his time served with us was short, he left a long-lasting impression on our agency with his infectious smile and joyous demeanor.
As with all K-9’s, he was more than a dog; he was one of our own from our ranks. Max was able to retire and live a happy, fulfilling life up to his teenage years, at home with Ofc. Kleinow, his wife Michelle, and his other K-9 siblings, Loki, Keeper, and Gabby. Rest easy, Max, you will be missed.
