An inmate at the Atlantic County Justice Facility in Mays Landing has been charged with beating up a corrections officer and knocking him unconscious.

BreakingAC.com reports that Unique Tyson, 28, of Egg Harbor Township, attacked a correction officer who was helping the medical staff give Tyson medication on Saturday, April 19, when the incident happened.

Corrections Officer Attacked by Inmate

According to court documents, the corrections officer reached for the drinking cup Tyson was using, and the inmate lunged at him and began to punch him in the face repeatedly.

The corrections officer retreated into another cell, but the inmate followed him, throwing the guard up against the cell door and pummeling him in the face until he lost consciousness.

The report says that two witnesses and body camera footage back up this account of what happened between Tyson and the corrections officer.

Corrections Officer Hospitalized

The corrections officer was carried out on a stretcher and taken to the hospital with facial injuries.

Unique Tyson was charged with second-degree aggravated assault and is facing a detention hearing this Friday, April 25.
