The History of the Jitney in Atlantic City

Jitneys have been traveling the streets of Atlantic City since 1905 when the price of a jitney was 5 cents. The word “Jitney” is a slang word for 5 cents.

The first Jitneys were introduced in The World’s Playground on March 15, 1915. They were not buses in those days, but rather large Ford Model-T touring cars. Everything was manual.

Drivers used a rope system to open the doors to let passengers on and off the jitney from the back of the vehicle.

By city ordinance, Atlantic City limits the number of jitney franchises to 190.

Each Jitney is individually owned and operated. It has provided a great living for thousands of locals over the years.
