Atlantic City Electric Issues Warning About Payment Scams
Atlantic City Electric has issued a warning about tricks that scammers are using to try to steal customer payments.
ACE is part of a national week-long utility company campaign to help customers spot tricks scammers use to steal money.
Atlantic City Electric said scammers are visiting or calling targeted customers to tell them that their electric account is delinquent and will be shut-off for non-payment unless they purchase a reloadable debit card for a specific amount from a local retail store.
According to the statement, ACE will never make a single call threatening to shut off service within a few hours.
Victims are then instructed to call a scammer telephone number with their credit card’s account number and unique serial number. Once the scammer obtains the card's identifying information, the value is then downloaded, swept and stolen without a trace.
Business customers also are being told to use this method to make payment of about $500 to have a new meter installed. Scammers tell customers that the state has mandated these meter changes. This is not true.
If you question the legitimacy of a call, you should hang up and call Atlantic City Electric at 800-642-3780.
