
Latin Music From AC’s Golden Age on Display at Boardwalk Hall
A fascinating aspect of Atlantic City's "Golden Age" for entertainment will be the focus of a new exhibition beginning November 19th in Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall.
A look at Atlantic City’s rich Latin music heritage will be on display with a new long-term exhibition, “Latin Rhythms by the Sea”, on view at The Atlantic City Experience, located in the lobby of Boardwalk Hall.
To celebrate the exhibition's opening, Boardwalk Hall is holding a free Latin pipe organ concert on Wednesday, November 19, at 12:00 pm, performed by Luke Staisiunas on the world’s largest organ, followed by a 1:00 pm reception with light refreshments.
This is a very special event celebrating the classic Latin rhythms of Atlantic City with Boardwalk Hall's world-famous Midler-Losh organ
Not only is it the largest pipe organ in the world, but with over 33,000 pipes and 7 manuals, it is the loudest and largest musical instrument on Earth.
Doors open at 11:45 am, and admission and parking under Boardwalk Hall are free.
A Fascinating Look at Atlantic City's Golden Age
Atlantic City's "Golden Age" for entertainment occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the city was a premier vacation resort known for its vibrant culture, diverse amusements, and iconic Boardwalk entertainment.
At the same time, Latin music, also referred to as Afro-Caribbean-rooted music, became popular in the United States, with genres such as rumba, mambo, chachachá, and later salsa influencing the entertainment scene.
This exhibition will highlight many of the important events, places, and people for which Atlantic City is known.
Atlantic City's Latin Music Heritage is Being Celebrated.
The exhibition, presented by the Foundation of the Atlantic City Free Public Library, will provide a glimpse back at many of the Latin greats whose bands brought Atlantic City audiences up on the dance floor.
emorabilia drawn from private collections will feature great Atlantic City venues, many no longer in existence, including Club Harlem, Round the World Room, President Hotel, Mayflower Hotel, Paradise Club, and the Torch Club.
Musical pioneers represented include: Cuban-born Miguelito Valdés (the original Mr. Babalú), famed Spanish-born bandleader Xavier Cugat, multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, bandleader, and proud son of Puerto Rican parents, “El Rey” Tito Puente, and many others.
The Atlantic City Experience, in the lobby of Jim Whalen Boardwalk Hall at 2301 Boardwalk in Atlantic City, is open 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday.
The Atlantic City Experience is presented by the Atlantic City Free Public Library.
