You have three opportunities in the next week to tell the federal government what you think about the plan to build and operate an offshore wind farm 15 miles off the coast of Atlantic City.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management will be holding three virtual meetings to accept comments and questions about the plan to build a 1,100 megawatt wind energy facility named Ocean Wind during the 30-day public comment period in April.

The meetings will be held on Tuesday, April 13 at 1pm, Thursday, April 15th at 5:30pm and Tuesday, April 20th at 5:30pm.

The Danish power company Ørsted is developing Ocean Wind, which would include close to 100 wind turbines. The wind farm is one of two offshore projects planned for South Jersey. The other, known as Atlantic Shores, is planned to be built off the coast of Long Beach Island.

Fishing groups have questioned the impact of the wind farms on fishing and sea life. Others are concerned that the wind turbines will be visible from the shore, negatively affecting tourism.

The New Jersey wind farms are an important part of Gov. Murphy's clean energy plan.

“The offshore wind industry in the United States can significantly contribute to the United States power mix to bring clean energy to the grid, create new good-paying jobs and confront the current climate crisis,” said BOEM Director Amanda Lefton.

“BOEM will work with industry, Tribes, government partners, the fishing community, conservation organizations, and labor unions to make sure that any offshore wind development is done in an environmentally safe and responsible manner. Public input plays an essential role for identifying and mitigating any potential impacts from proposed energy development activities.”
