Five of Atlantic City's casinos will light up in yellow at 6 pm Monday as part of a nationwide Holocaust awareness campaign.

Monday is Holocaust Memorial Day and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Nazi Germany’s Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.

Atlantic City Casinos Light Up For Holocaust Remembrance

The Sara and Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center at Stockton University is partnering with five Atlantic City casinos to light up Atlantic City yellow today to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Caesars Atlantic City, Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Atlantic City, Resorts Atlantic City, Ocean Casino Resort and Tropicana Atlantic City — will change their outside lighting to yellow tonight at 6:00 pm.

The Importance of the Color Yellow for Holocaust Awareness

Yellow symbolizes Holocaust awareness because it was the color of the Star of David badges Jews were forced to wear by the Nazis during the Holocaust.

Irvin Moreno-Rodriguez, the director of Stockton’s Holocaust Resource Center approached Mark Giannantonio, the president and CEO of Resorts with the idea earlier this month.

Giannantonio committed Resorts to take part.

“Atlantic City’s casinos are so honored to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day on the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.”

“The casino industry is proud to light up our properties yellow in honor of the 11 million victims of the Holocaust, including 6 million Jews and 1.5 million children. We must always remember.”

International Holocaust Memorial Day

The United Nations declared January 27 as the International Holocaust Memorial Day in 2005.

It marks the liberation of Auschwitz in 1945 and remembers the six million Jews who lost their lives under the Nazis.

Irvin Moreno-Rodriguez, the director of Stockton’s Holocaust Resource Center and a teacher of Holocaust and Genocide Studies classes at Stockton University, added that the campaign reminds him of something he reiterates to his students.

“From darkness comes light, and Holocaust education is a powerful light, reminding us of the enduring power of the human spirit, and the possibility of building a brighter future for all,” he said.
