If you like to watch the awards shows to root for New Jersey connections, there's really only one to hope for at this year's Academy Awards.

The only local connection in the main categories is Joe Pesci for The Irishman. Pesci is nominated for Actor in A Supporting Role. He will battle Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins and Al Pacino for the Oscar.

It's hard to imagine a tougher category than that one, which is loaded with some of the great actors of our time. In his career, Pesci has 3 Academy Award nominations for Supporting Actor, and one win, for Goodfellas in 1991.

His other two nominations are this year's, and one for Raging Bull in 1980. He has been nominated for 3 Golden Globes as well, for the exact same three roles.

The Academy Awards are this Sunday night 8:00pm on ABC. Once again this year, there will be no host for the Academy Awards show.

And by the way, there are no nominations for Meryl Streep this year at the Oscars. She did get a nomination from the Golden Globes this year for her work in Big Little Lies, but did not get a nomination for an Academy Award this time around.
