NJ Drivers, Don’t Hit the Road Without Checking This List
If you've ever been pulled over in New Jersey, you know the thoughts that quickly run through your mind as the police officer walks up to your car window.
First, you run through the laundry list of things you'll be asked for: Is my new insurance card with me? I'm pretty sure I renewed my driver's license? I have my registration, right?
Then you think of the stuff that could be wrong: I think both of my headlights work? Did I forget to get my car inspected? Was I speeding?
And then it's the excuses that you try to have ready: I'm late for work. I have to pick up my kids at practice. I'm on my way to see a doctor.
We've all been there.
But while some driving requirements are obvious, many drivers don't realize New Jersey law actually requires more than a dozen items to be in your vehicle, and in proper working order, any time you’re on the road. Miss one and a routine traffic stop can turn into a ticket.
Take a couple of minutes to scan through this list and save yourself the hassle of having to pay a big fine.
Keep in mind that this is a very brief summary and many things have specific details that may apply in a unique situation (commercial vehicles vs. passenger cars, motorcycles have some special laws, etc.).
A few of these will certainly surprise you, especially the details surrounding #10.
