When I first entered this home I had a claustrophobic feeling, it felt like the walls were closing in on me. Maybe because there are dark colors incorporated throughout the house and lots of thick tapestries. It just feels dark and eerily quiet. Of course, old dolls are always creepy and there are a few! the upstairs looks spooky and the bedrooms feel like someone is watching you.

The home we are talking about is the Emlen Physick Estate in Cape May, New Jersey. Some history about the Emlen Physick Estate. The mansion was built by Dr. Emlen Physick, who built the estate 142 years ago in 1879. The mansion has 18 rooms and many consider it an architectural wonder, which was built by famed American architect Frank Furness. Many feel it's a wonderful example of Victorian Stick-style architecture.

The mansion was also featured in season 1, episode 6 of Haunted Towns on Destination America. The home has also been featured on several podcasts. One of the most prominent ghosts in the home is  Dr. Physick’s Aunt Emilie, according to psychic medium Craig McManus in an article from Cape May Vacation Rentals. McManus also cited other paranormal residents of the home including Dr. Physick's Mother's younger daughter...  Isabelle, or Bella. Plus Dr. Physick's dogs...yes ghost dogs! All I know is that as soon as you go in this mansion you feel something...just weird.

It's almost Halloween and this is the season to talk about "haunted houses" and the Emlen Physick Estate, I think, fits right into the conversation. I have toured the mansion twice and both times I felt like there was a spooky vibe throughout the home. Just something about the decor and the stories of this old home is enough to spook you no matter what time of year.

Next time you are in Cape May try to swing by the mansion and see if you spot a ghost, maybe it's Mother? Happy Halloween

LOOK: How Halloween has changed in the past 100 years

Stacker compiled a list of ways that Halloween has changed over the last 100 years, from how we celebrate it on the day to the costumes we wear trick-or-treating. We’ve included events, inventions, and trends that changed the ways that Halloween was celebrated over time. Many of these traditions were phased out over time. But just like fake blood in a carpet, every bit of Halloween’s history left an impression we can see traces of today.
