This is a story that perhaps, only people who have pets in their homes can relate to.

We love our pets and when we bring them into our home, they become a part of our family.

Sadly, the lifespan of our fur babies is never as long as we'd like.

Losing your pet is heartbreaking.  I've had dogs my whole life, and the pain of losing a beloved pet never goes away.

Loss of a Pet Can Be as Devastating as Losing a Human

It occurred to me that I take the loss of a pet harder than some humans who have passed.

I used to feel guilty about that.  Then I heard an explanation that made sense.

We love our friends and family.  However, we don't see most family members every day.  We may not even speak for a day or more at a time.

Our pets are with us constantly.  They depend on us to live.  Without us, they can't survive.

For many, that need becomes symbiotic.  We need our pets.  The loss of our constant companion is devastating.

There's Help Available for Those Dealing with Loss

What you might not know is that there are professionals and groups that help those trying to get through the grieving process.

Sometimes it helps to have people who are willing to listen and not judge you.  These are people who have experienced the pain you're feeling.

You're Okay

For those dealing with the loss of a pet, experts say,

  • It's okay to be an emotional wreck.  People deal with loss in different ways.
  • Seek help from a support group.  These groups are made up of people like you, and they can relate to your experience.
  • In some cases, you might want to seek out professional help.
  • Create a memorial.  In my home office, I have my pets' urns lined on a shelf along with their paw prints.  It helps me feel close to them.  I have also kept dog tags and collars.  Whatever helps you feel better.  There's no right or wrong.

Finally, give yourself time to mourn before seeking a new companion.

I always say my boys will send me a sign when it's time.

For some, the transition is fast.  For others, it takes time.  Only you will know when you're ready.
