The National Weather Service office in Mt. Holly has confirmed a tornado plowed across portions of Mays Landing Saturday night.

Meteorologists say the twister, which was on the ground for less than one mile and for about one minute, was an EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale with winds of 100 MPH.

According to their storm survey, the tornado made an initial touchdown just east of Llewellyn Avenue and south of Route 40 in the Richland section of Buena Vista Township.

The tornado continued moving east through a heavily wooded area, moving parallel to Landis Avenue, and into Mays Landing.

As it moved into Mays Landing, the tornado produced its strongest wind damage, where a roof was partially lifted off a single-family home. Numerous trees on the property had large branches broken, with an area of uprooted trees just to the east of the home.

The tornado then continued eastward along Landis Avenue, uprooting large trees and snapping branches. Damage remained mainly confined to the north side of the road.

The tornado then crossed Estelle Avenue, where broken branches and snapped trunks continued for another 200 yards into the woods.

This tornado is now the seventh to be confirmed in New Jersey Saturday night as a powerful storm system moved across the region.

One tornado was also confirmed in Pennsylvania while another in southern Delaware killed one person.
