• A man was killed while working on a radio tower in Atlantic City Thursday
  • ACPD says a portion of the tower fell while one part remains hanging at the top
  • Two other workers were not hurt

Update

An update from the Atlantic City Police Department Friday evening concerning the incident said, "A large section of the tower fell to the ground, while an additional piece remains suspended near the top of the structure. The Atlantic City Police Department has established a perimeter around the site until the hanging section can be safely secured and removed."

We visited the site Friday night and the picture below shows the top section of the tower. Due to low lighting, it was difficult to see exactly what was hanging off of the top of the structure.

The name of the worker who lost his life has not yet been released. The website wirelessestimator.com reported he was 44 years old. WPVI-TV said that the crew was from North Carolina.

Dozens of firefighters, police officers, and EMS personnel worked for approximately 90 minutes to lower all three men to safety. Fire Chief Scott Evans said in a statement, "Our team are well trained for these kinds of incidents. It is just another example of how our firefighters are prepared for any call at any time."

Subcarrier Communications, based in Old Bridge, NJ, acquired the tower about two years ago from Equity Communications.

Published reports say a worker was killed Thursday afternoon on a radio tower in Atlantic City.

According to WPVI-TV, a crew of three men was doing work on the structure that sits next to the drawbridge on Route 30 when one of them was injured around 4:30.

That unidentified worker was able to be brought down to the ground, but he did not survive. The two others were not hurt.

That radio tower on Murray Ave., which has been a fixture of the Atlantic City skyline for decades, is about 340-feet tall and was home to stations such as 1340 AM WMID and 99.3 WMID-FM (now WZBZ), among others. Both of those stations vacated that tower a long time ago.

This is a developing story that will be updated when more information becomes available.
