The Oldest Library In Ocean County Turns 150 Years Old
Ocean County's First Library Was Built in 1875 And Is Still Open Today
Ah yes! History. I love history, and when the history is right here in New Jersey, it makes it that much more intriguing. I came across this lead while reading a local article in The Leader, which the Sandpaper publishes. This particular edition came from the Tuckerton/Little Egg Harbor edition. Rick Mellerup wrote the story of Ocean County's Oldest Library.

It was shortly after the Civil War ended and Ulysses S. Grant was President of the United States when a tiny library in Southern Ocean County was built. I'm talking about the Tuckerton Library, which was built in 1875 and is celebrating 150 years of service to the community here in New Jersey.
The Tuckerton Library celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, and even though it has grown and expanded over the years, the original building survives at the library located at 380 Bay Ave, Tuckerton, NJ 08087.
The Tuckerton Library is now part of the fantastic Ocean County Library System, but outdated the system by fifty years. The Tuckerton Library was built in 1875, the Ocean County Library System was created in 1925.
The Tuckerton Library will celebrate its Sesquicentennial (150 years) anniversary on May 3, 2025. By the way, the United States will celebrate its Semiquicentennial anniversary (250 years) on July 4, 2025.
So if you would like to read and experience history right here in Ocean County take a ride to the Tuckerton Library and see for yourself a place where local residents have sat and read since 1875 at the Tuckerton Library.
