Update on Scheduling for New Jersey REAL ID, Here’s What You Need to Know

I don't have a Real ID, yet. I have to schedule a time to get my REAL ID. I hear it's crazy to try to get an appointment, but the NJMVC has made some changes to that. It hopefully will help scheduling appointments for the REAL ID.

If you're anything like me, you're not sure how they even work. I remember several years ago the Real ID was talked about and several of you have a Real ID. You have to get one of these by the deadline to be able to to board domestic flights and certain federal offices.

The official date is May 7th, 2025 for the deadline.

Why a Real ID in New Jersey?

It proves it's truly you. There are certain places and flights that will only accept the Real ID.

 Who should get a Real ID in New Jersey?

Real ID's are best for those who typically use their driver license or non-driver ID (instead of a passport or other forms of ID) to fly within the U.S.

The problem is, everyone in New Jersey, seems to be trying to schedule for an appointment for a REAL ID at the same time.

GOOD NEWS FROM MVC WITH SCHEDULING REAL ID APPOINTMENTS 

UPDATE! UPDATE! From the NJMVC Chief Administrator: "Over the last few months, we've seen a dramatic increase in demand for REAL ID from our customers, and we've repeatedly added and reallocated appointments to better meet that demand. The new initiative announced today will expand access further, helping to service more customers who need or want to get a REAL ID."

According to cbsnews.com, starting on March, 20th, 2025 the NJMVC will add appoints for "REAL ID THURSDAYS". You can sign up for these appointments on the MVC website by CLICKING HERE starting on March 14th, 2025.

Also, the MVC will host several mobile unit events on Saturdays. Residents can also renew or sign up for a REAL ID and these mobile events begin April 5th, 2025.
