Meteor Spotted Over Atlantic County With a ‘Streaking Tail’

For the second time in less than a week, there were reports of a meteor being spotted in the darkened night sky over New Jersey.

Sunday at 9:01 pm, a meteor was spotted above Hammonton.

According to the American Meteor Society, a meteor was seen shooting across the sky over Atlantic County on Sunday evening.

The American Meteor Society received 139 reports from Maryland to New Hampshire about the meteor. One person in Hammonton described it as looking like a firework fizzling out.

The fireball was slower than I assumed shooting stars would be. I have seen meteor shower where it looked to be bright white lights. This I felt looked like a firework, but the trajectory was a clear arc not seen in firework shows. I even thought I might be seeing a drone explode. But the neon green and blue streaking tail solidified that it was different.

 

Second Night of Meteors Reports in a Week

Another meteor was seen blazing across the skies over New Jersey and several other East Coast states early Wednesday morning.

The American Meteor Society said it received 44 reports about a fireball" seen flying over states as far south as Delaware and as far north as Connecticut around 3:45 a.m.  Wednesday. The AMS also received seven videos and one photo of the fireball.

 The Lyrid Meteor Shower Runs Through April 29th

The meteors are almost certainly part of the Lyrid meteor shower, one of the oldest known meteor showers, dating back to 687 BC, according to NASA.

If the sky is dark, experts say, you can expect to see 10 to 15 Lyrids each hour. I would be happy to see one good one.
